Automated data collection to adjust cultivation is nothing new. Many growers use programmes that use actual crop data to show what needs to be done to keep the crop as healthy as possible. What is new, however, is the so-called Triple Thrive Data Concept: a unique combination of sensors, satellites and drones that takes care of bringing in all relevant crop information.

Yookr is working with Agri data services BioScope BV, W2R Drone Projects, and Paletti Growers -a regional cooperative of several nurseries from Limburg, North Brabant and Nordrhein-Westfalen- to set up the study. The aim of this research is to develop a data-driven dashboard for the horticulture sector. All incoming data is converted to control data. Growers can easily view this data via a dashboard developed for this purpose. The control data helps in crop optimisation, both for open field and greenhouse horticulture.

Subsidy from the SVTGV (Stichting Versterking Tuinbouwcluster Greenport Venlo) ensured that the research can be rolled out in practice at three Paletti Growers pilot companies in the region. Kwekerij Stals BV, Warmerdam Someren BV and Kwekerij Verschure Vogelsangs BV are the companies that will start with the Triple Thrive Data Concept. They will work with a dashboard, receiving data from ground sensors and imagery from satellites and drones. The idea is to convert all raw data into clear signals on the dashboard, so growers can quickly and clearly see the state of play and what steps need to be taken.

All parties involved hope the unique data collection and processing will allow them to respond more specifically to what the crop needs. This can result in lower consumption of plant protection products, water and fertilisers. In addition, problems can be prevented by being spotted earlier. As a result, nurseries have less work on their crops and the right actions can be taken at the right times.

The project started in January with a kick-off meeting in Aarle-Rixtel. Paletti Growers is organising a demonstration day in spring for all its members and other interested growers. In addition, the results will be shared with a wide audience within the industry.
